New wheels for the Passat
I hit a pothole and bent my front BBS wheel. It was only $100 more to buy 4 non-stock wheels vs buying only 1 stock BBS replacement and I wanted to black out the Passat.
Tonight’s Beer – Howl Winter Seasonal by Magic Hat

“Born of dark, cold and snow in the MARROW of the North East’s longest night, HOWL comes in on WAILING winds with winter-weary eyes, burning holes in sunless shadows. In it’s darkened depths our inner voids are warmed. HOWL will remain until your bones are thawed, your spirit is freed… and until there is no longer a NEED…”
I was anxious to try this beer because it’s a winter ale with a low alcohol content with only 4.6%. I enjoy winter ales but they can be quite strong.
The Howl pours as black like a stout with chocolate and coffee aromas.
Like the smell, there are chocolate and coffee flavors with hints of roasted malt and smoke. With only being 4.6%, there is not a strong alcohol presence.
It’s a decent beer but something is missing. Maybe winter ales need to be 7+% to get a true taste. And coming from Vermont, it was hard to give it a chance.
Master’s World Course in Mol, Belgium
This is the same course I raced at last year for the world championships in Mol, Belgium last year.
New Belgium Abbey
The first half of the beer was great. I thought maybe this was it, but the 2nd half tasted like a triple instead of a double with a strong alcohol taste.
A – Pours a deep copper color and a one finger tan head that has average retention. There is some slight lacing.
S – Smells of yeast, brown sugar, and apple. Sticks around during the whole drink. Nice.
T – The alcohol in this is WAY too overpowering. It fusses with a sweet syrupy taste that inst very pleasant. There is some slight brown sugar and yeast. I hope this is a bad batch.
M – Not enough carbonation helps bring out that awful alcohol fusion.
D – I’m really disappointed in this. My friend had this a few weeks ago and loved it. I also see I am in the minority among my fellow BAs. Again I hope this is a bad batch, as it wasn’t easy to finish.

Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium s lineup – but it didn t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.
