Lake Minnetonka 15K Skate Ski Race

Saturday was one of the best days i’ve felt on skis. It may have been because it was all flat and on Lake Minnetonka. I can fake it on the flats, but suffer on climbs so it was great to get after it. I started mid-pack and was expecting to finish there as well, but I just started passing and passing until I got into a group in 5-7th place. Luckily a crossniacs teammate was in that group and was the strongest of all and was content to pull us around. I caught this group in the 2nd lap and just hung on. On the 3rd and last lap I moved to 2nd skier and we opened a little gap on the other guy. I told my teammate to “hang on” and I went to the front and skied as hard as I could until the other guy was dropped and then let Erik pull me the rest of the way to the finish.

After the race Peggy, Sky and I cruised around on Lake Minnetonka in our cars. It’s crazy to think it gets that cold in Minnesota that you can drive cars on the lake.

Tonight’s Beer – New Belgium Frambozen

I’m a fan of Kriek beers and was excited to try the New Belgium Frambozen. I enjoyed a lambic with the family over the holidays. Traditional lambic beers are really sweet and you can usually only enjoy only one before it becomes too sweet.

Frambozen is derived from the Flemish word for raspberries and inspired by the Framboise beers of Belgium, where the use of raspberries in beer outdates the use of traditional hops.

The New Belgium is a nice compromise. It has hints of raspberries but is not as sweet as a traditional lambic. So if one wanted to drink a few they could.

Pours a deep ruby brown with a noticeable reddish hue. The head was small and quick and also had a bit of red in it–although this may be the power of suggestion.

While the raspberry is also present in the flavor it is more of an overall effect.

New Belgium’s Description

Frambozen begins with the aroma of fresh red raspberries, followed by the ripe seductiveness of a fruity brown ale with depth and delicate malt notes. It is deep ruby in color, with flavors just as rich. Every year, New Belgium sends a delegate to the Pacific Northwest to oversee the process of turning freshly picked berries into a pure juice to be added in fermentation. The coming of Thanksgiving at New Belgium is ushered in with the first sighting of our cellar operators scuttling about, covered head to tow in a festive crimson berry wash.

Bitch Creek ESB (Extra Special Brown Ale) Review

I’m a fan of ESBs and a fan of the Grand Tetons so how could I go wrong.

Appearance- Pours a lighter brown color with a soapy looking small head.

Smell- malty, some earthy and pine hops. A tad metallic even.

Taste- A bit of toasted malts, some light pine hopping. A slight nuttyness.

Mouthfeel- Low carbonation and a bit thin.

Overall- I was a little disappointed and it was a rather underwhelming brown ale. It is a 6% alcohol content, which is low for specialty beers but it tasted more like a 9-10% triple.

2011 – Breaking Out Of The Comfort Zone

Back in 1995 I learned to program for the web. We didn’t have WYSIWYG editors, we had to hand code everything. I’ve played around with these WYSIWYG editors since and done some light wed design around the way. I can make my way around HTML and still program, but I’d like to continue to learn. For 2011 I’ve made the commitment to sharpen my web development and design skills and get a Web Design Professional Certificate from Minneapolis Community and Technical College. I’ll be taking the following classes:
* HTML I & II
* Dreamweaver I & II
* CSS
* Creating Graphics for the Web
* Flash I & II

Nothing in the World can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination are omnipotent. The slogan press on has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. -Calvin Coolidge

Pre-Loppet

I have not been getting much cardio in since Palm Springs so today I headed out for my first time on the skate skis this year in 7 degree temps…If it wasn’t a race, I wouldn’t be out there but racing gets me out in all sorts of conditions.

It’s nice not to have any pressure to get results since I’m not the best skate skier out there. It was a good cardio workout and after I got moving I wasn’t cold.
