Tonight’s Beer – Summit Pumpkin Porter

I was excited to try this beer. I enjoy porters and pumpkin.

Marketing Spin
The fifth beer in the Unchained Series will be from brewer Nate Siats and is an Imperial Pumpkin Porter. Nate is a big fan of pumpkins and wants to do this up right, starting with where the pumpkins come from. The small, local, organic farm that is providing the pumpkins just so happens to be owned by Charles Jones, one of the strong fellas who work on our keg line! Nate’s desired flavor profile in his own words- A dark, chocolaty, full bodied beer with a slight bitter after taste. Evenly spiced with a hint of pumpkin, you would think you were sitting down for thanksgiving dessert. Perfect for a cool, fall afternoon.

———-
Bottle. Pours a very deep slight viscous black color. Just a hint of foam on top. Flavor is heavy with a tiny hint of pumpkin and spice at the back end. Just a hint of booze and hops at the back end to dry it out. Thick and creamy, lingers on the palate. Medium to full bodied.

It’s an OK beer, but did not live up to my expectations.

My search continues for a good American beer.

Cheating on the Belgians

I bought a mix 6-pack of non-Belgian beer to see if the Americans have what it takes. Tonight’s beer is the Samuel Adams Cranberry Lambic. I discovered Kriek lambic in Belgium and the cherry was my favorite. Kriek (pronounced ‘creek’) is a style of Belgian beer, made by fermenting lambic with sour Morello cherries. It is very sweet and a lot of people think it is too sweet, but I enjoy it.

A: Pours a bit thin and very little head, Slightly reddish orange and unfiltered look. It looks like someone put a shot of OJ and cranberry in a wheat beer.

S: Smell is pleasant and light berry.

T: Tart and sweet at the same time like the cranberry itself, very little hops or malt presence.

M: A bit on the watery thin side very litely carbed. No lacing at all. No off flavors.

D:Not what I would label or call a lambic as far as taste, but a decent beer and unlike the real lambics, you could drink a few of these Sam Adams. The problem with the real Lambics is that they are very sweet and after one you are done.

So far in 2011, 0 for 1 for the American beers.

2010 year in review

2010 was a good year for me and my family. The highlight of 2010 for me was a once in a lifetime cyclocross trip to Belgium for masters worlds. The lowest and hardest day in 2010 was when we had to say goodbye to our best friend Laska.

April
I did the Imperial Challenge in Breckenridge. You ride your bike 6.3 miles from the Breckenridge Recreation Center to SCR 3 to the Bergenhof Restaurant at the Peak 8 base area. The course ascends 2,998′ up Claimjumper to the base of the T-bar, up the T-bar path, through the gate, and up the bootpack to the top of Peak 8. The course descends Whale’s Tail to Vertigo; both are double black diamond, ungroomed natural alpine terrain. From Vertigo, the course descends Claimjumper to finish skier’s left above the Bergenhof.
